Scheduled Elections are held at the Spring General Meeting in March/April to elect members of the Executive for the upcoming year. Executives serve their term in office from May 1st to April 30th of the following year.

Unscheduled By-Elections may be called if new positions are added to the Executive mid-way through the year or if a position becomes vacant due to resignation or impeachment.

Each Election is overseen and administered by a Chief Electoral Officer and at least one Deputy Electoral Officer. Hiring for these positions begins in early to mid-February, with appointments being made by the Executive before each election. Learn more about the hiring of Electoral Officers.

Current Election

The Writ has dropped, and the 2021 Executive Election is now underway! Voting will take place at the Spring General Meeting on 12/04/2021. The full Writ of Election can be viewed here.

Nominations

Nominations are now open and will be accepted until Monday, April 12th, 2021 at the Spring General Meeting. Any student currently enrolled at Carleton University is eligible to be nominated and hold an Executive position. An individual can nominate themselves or another person by sending an email with the nominee’s Name and desired position(s) to elections@cufirst.ca.

Note on Nominations: Individuals may be nominated for multiple positions but can only be elected to and hold one (1) Executive position

Any Full Member (enrolled at Carleton University for the 2021/22 school year) can become a Candidate for the position if they are Nominated by themselves or another Member. Nominations can be sent to the Chief Electoral Officer via Email at elections@cufirst.ca

In light of the COVID-19 health crisis, and in accordance with the current Social Distancing policies implemented by Carleton University and Ottawa Public Health, the By-Elections will take place virtually via Web Conference. Meeting details will be provided closer to the day of an election.

Regularly-scheduled elections for all Executive Positions will take place at the next Spring General Meeting in March/April 2021.

Current Candidates

The Chief Electoral Officer has received nominations for the following individuals/positions, and has confirmed each as a Candidate.

Campaigning

Candidates will be allowed to campaign from the time of accepting their Nomination until the beginning of the General Meeting. All candidates will be invited to deliver a speech lasting no longer than five (5) minutes at the General Meeting, before voting begins.

The use of official club resources, including Social Media accounts, for the purposes of campaigning for a candidate is prohibited.

Voting

All voting will take place online at the Spring General Meeting using paper ballots. If only one candidate is nominated for a position, that candidate will be Acclaimed and will assume the position without the need for a vote. If two or more candidates are nominated, a vote will be conducted using Single Transferable Vote (STV) rules, where the candidate that receives 50% of the vote or more will be declared the winner.
